Poor quality, slow

I took my 26 foot trailer boat to Shelter Island Boatyard after calling to make sure they could take the job for gel coat repair and detailing. When I arrived, Scott made room in the driveway so I could get the boat in the yard. When I pulled in Scott tells me he won’t have time to do the job and introduced me to Angel, the owner/operator of J.A.G., a boat painting/detailing company. I showed Angel the chip/scratch repairs that I needed on the hull (about 6) plus a 2.5 foot bow keel molding that needed to be replaced, some chips in my bait tank and a couple holes on the cabin where old antennas were once mounted, and ask him to detail inside and out with some teak cleaning and oiling. The next day, Scott calls to tell me that they charge $104 per day for”lay days” basically use of the yard while outside companies work on your boat. Ok, I figure 2-3days worth of work, I’ll pay that. I expressed my concern about the gel coat color and quality and Scott assured me Angel would do good work. After 4 days (Thursday), Angel gives me a progress report that sounds like the gel coat repairs were complete and the hull and bait tank were polished. I tell Angel that since the “lay days” were adding up to get as much done as possible and I would pick the boat up on Monday. Monday afternoon I go to pick the boat up and find that all they had done was the hull repairs and polish, cleaned and polished the bait tank, and filled 5 small screw holes on the cabin. There were still 4 small screw holes exposed near the cabin hatch and chips in the bait tank. The top decks and cabin had not been touched for any detailing. They had the boat 7 days (including Saturday and Sunday). For that amount of time, I would expect more work to have been completed. After telling Scott what I wanted done he even estimated 2-3 days. The gel coat work was not very good ( color didn’t match and it sticks out). They charged me $2140. Bottom line...I’m not happy with the work or service that I received from Scott and J.A.G. and would not recommend Shelter Island Boatyard. For the amount of time they had my boat and the amount they charged I expect more and better quality work.

AFTER A NASTY ALTERCATION WITH A POST IN THE LA HARBOR I TOOK MY BOAT TO SHELTER ISLAND BOAT YARD WHERE I'D HAD SOME WORK DONE 2.5 YEARS AGO. I WAS SO PLEASED WITH THEM THEN, I DECIDED TO BRING MY BOAT BACK. THIS TIME THE WORK WAS FAR MORE EXTENSIVE AND THE WHOLE BOAT HAD TO BE REPAINTED. JAG/GORDO DID A TOP NOTCH JOB. Gordo, the co-owner of the company, went over and above the call of duty showing great pride in his workmanship and delivering my boat back to me in better than new condition!! Great job JAG!!
